Altuglas
Transparent synthetical material used by some companies for the
manufacture of humidors.
Binder
The tobacco leaf which holds the filler leaves together.
Boîte Nature
A natural cedar box holding 25 cigars in 2 rows.
Cabinet
Cubic box made of natural cedar, with a sliding lid on the top.
Capacity is 25 or 50 cigars tided with a silk ribbon and presented
without bands.
Capa
Another name for "Warper".
Claro
A gold wrapper.
Colorado
A reddish-brown wrapper.
Colorado Claro
A brown wrapper.
Colorado Maduro
A dark brown wrapper.
Double Claro
A greenish-brown wrapper.
Filler
The cigar’s core made of tobaccos leaves.
Flag Leaves
Some cigars have a twisted extension of the wrapper leaf at their
head instead of the traditional cap. See also "Twist".
Foot
The usually (not always) pre-cut end of the cigar. That’s
the end you light.
Head
The top of the cigar (the end you smoke).
Half-wheel
A pack of 50 cigars tied with a ribbon.
Lasioderma Serricorne
The lasioderma is also known as tobacco beetle. It can quickly cause
damage on cigars. The adult measures 2 mm and is brown-tobacco in
color. The larva, the nymph and the adult eat tobacco and dig galleries
in cigars. The eggs hatch when the temperature reaches approximately
22°C. In factory, the cigars are placed in fumigations rooms
to get rid of the bugs. However, the eggs survive this operation,
that's why it's still possible to find this parasite in tour humidor.
Long filler
Cigars made with whole leaves (usually hand-rolled).
Module
Every cigar is part of a category depending on its shape (ring gauge
and lenght). Every module has a generic name (Robusto, Corona, etc.).
Oscuro
An almost black wrapper.
Puro
This Spanish word is used for cigars made with tobacco from a same
origin (filler, binder and wraper from the same country).
Quater-wheel
A pack of 25 cigars tied with a ribbon.
Short filler
Cigars made with fragments of tobacco leaves (usually machine made).
Traditional box
A paper-covered box decorated with vistas, holding 25 cigars in
2 rows.
Twist
The top (head) of the cigar is not closed with a piece of tobacco
leaf, but finished with a twist (Cf. Cohiba Lanceros, Trinidad Fundadores,
Montecristo Especials, etc.).
Varnished box
A varnished cedar box holding 25 cigars, usually in 3 rows of 8-9-8
vitolas.
Vista
Illustrations placed on the tradional boxes (and the sheet between
the cover and the cigars).
Vitola
From a same factory (even between different brands), this word indicates
the various types of cigars produced.
Warper
The high-quality leaf warping the binder.
